Ten years ago, the National Tutoring Association (NTA), established National Tutor Appreciation Week. Since then, tutoring centers in K-12, community colleges, and four-year institutions of learning have hosted events to show tutors just how much they are appreciated.
At SCC, this year’s event will be a social in the Cultural Awareness Center on Wednesday, October 3 from 11:30am-1:00pm. Tutors will meet and greet their colleagues from across the campus, enjoy pizza, and receive a gift of appreciation for the work they do with students. In addition, special activities have been planned for tutors at the Davis and West Sacramento Outreach Centers.
We also use this occasion to remind students about the many labs on campus where they can receive one-on-one, drop-in, and small group tutoring help. We do that by placing a Welcome Table in front of the LRC. The Welcome Table has informational brochures about campus tutoring, staff to answer questions and get students connected to the various services, and snacks for students curious enough to stop by.
We encourage students to include tutoring as a tool in their academic success plan. If they like working with people and have developed expertise in study skills as well as specific subjects, we encourage them to consider becoming tutors.
So, Reader Fans, stop by the CAC and the Welcome Table on Wednesday, October 3, to greet the tutors and find out more about SCC tutoring.
