Sacramento Public Library Visit

Ann Owens and Jami Trawick did an excellent presentation about Sacramento Public Library (SPL) services on October 9, 2013 in LR 105.


Here are a few highlights from the session.

Get a Library Card

The first step in accessing many of the services provided by the Sacramento Public Library is to get a library card. You can obtain the Virtual Library eCard without ever visiting a branch, the process is completely online. Go to the website for more information about getting your card –


SPL Librarians Will Come to Your Classroom

If you think your class or department would benefit from a personalized session about SPL services, Ann Owens and Jami Trawick would love to come and do a demonstration.

They can even help all of your students obtain public library cards during their visit.

Login with a Name

You don’t have to use your library card to login to the SPL set of online resources. You can change your online library profile so that you can login with a user name that you choose, which should make it easier for you to remember.

Text a question and you’ll get an answer.  To register, text “saclib” to 66746.

Get Your Passport

Are you going on a trip overseas? You can obtain a new passport at the Central branch of the Sacramento Public Library.

Online Services

There are quite a few services that you can access through the SPL website once you have your library card.

You can find most of them by going in to the RESEARCH link.

Get Some Homework Help

There’s a variety of different types of homework help that’s available for students at different levels from K-12 to college level to adult learners.

Get Help with Your Job Hunt

Anyone can get help with the job hunting process with the JobNow Live Job Assistance online service. This includes features such as the option to submit a resume for feedback, ask for interview coaching and much more.


Free E-Magazines and E-Books

There are a number of ways to access free ebooks (both for reading or listening) through the SPL website.

You can also access copies of magazines through the Zinio e-magazine service. And while ebooks that you check out from the public library expire, once you download a copy of Martha Stewart Living to your e-reader, it’s yours to keep. It won’t expire.


Learn a Language

You can also learn a new language with the Mango online language system. Mango has options for those learning English and you can carry it with you on your smartphone.

Prepare for that Exam

Do you need to study for the SAT, GRE, Postal Exam, Military Entrance Exam? You can access study guides, take practice exams and much more… for most of the major exams.

Take a Computer Class Online

Learn how to use common online computer programs in online courses.


These are just a few of the services that the Sacramento Public Library offers.

We are fortunate to have such a strong public library system in the area.
